Introduction to Copper Repousse – decorative metal technique workshops September 7, 14 and 21

Repoussé is a method used to decorate metals by way of hammers and punches. The name repoussé is derived from the French pousser, “to push forward.”

This is an ancient technique, which has been used extensively throughout the history of metalworking. You work both sides of the metal to create a low relief of your chosen design. The process is therapeutic and offers the possibility of fantastic results.

The course, which consists of three workshops held weekly, costs £250 which includes your copper sheet and all the tools/equipment/materials needed to create your own piece of repousse.  There will also be refreshments as hammering is hot work!

No previous experience is necessary but will require your concentration and a lot of hammering!

The course is tailored to a maximum of five people and will run over three sessions this September.

Session One – Wednesday September 7, 5.30 – 8 pm – Introduction into the materials, process, and tools

We will create a small sample (bumble bee, sun/moon, star sign) involving different techniques and discuss creating your own piece.

Sessions Two and Three- Wednesday September 14 and 21, 5.30 – 8 pm  – Making and finishing your own piece

You will need to bring your design which we will then transfer onto a 100mm x 100mm sheet of copper.

We then learn about heating/annealing, lining, blocking out and refining using a pitch bowl.

The result is your copper sheet being transformed into your own personal work of art.

We finalise the pieces and go through some finishing processes.
