Description

“Come and make your own origami box out of sixteen squares of paper – yes, sixteen! While this modular origami box can seem daunting at first, I will guide you through the process of making it step by step. You don’t have to have any previous origami folding experience as we’ll take it slowly and at the end you’ll have made your very own box!” Tabita W Harvey

Origami and Paper Making

The art of making paper from pulp originated in China around 102AD.  The process of making paper was kept a secret in China for several hundred years then made its way through Korea and into Japan.  It is said that a Buddhist monk carried the secret.  The introduction of paper making to Japan became part of the lives of Japanese people.  Colours and silk threads were added and the art of paper folding, or origami, was held in high esteem.  Gifts were decorated with noshi.  Noshi had particular fold patterns depending on the gift.

Origami used to be taught in schools in Japan but today is generally taught at home.  Holidays are celebrated with origami decorations made by the family.  On children’s day, children make colourful carp: a fish that swims upstream against the current, symbolising strength.  In the summertime Tanabata, the Start Festival is celebrated: live bamboo branches are decorated with origami stars and other decorations, reminding Western observers of a decorated Christmas tree.

Our talented origami Collectivist Tabita W Harvey will deliver the workshop, demonstrating how to prepare and fold paper to make a delightful (and very strong!) box suitable for presenting a gift or as a keepsake.

All materials and refreshments will be provided.

Places are limited to six participants.
